The five-county Austin metro contained 40,268 small businesses as of 2010, the latest year for which official figures are available from the U.S. Census Bureau. That was up 2.3 percent from a 2009 total of 39,350. The only place to post a bigger increase was another Texas metro, McAllen-Edinburg, at 3.6 percent. Most major markets—76 of 102—suffered declines.
The Austin area added 46,300 private-sector jobs between the ends of 2007 and 2012, which was no mean feat for a recessionary period. Austin’s five-year employment-growth rate of 7.5 percent was easily the best in the nation. Eighty-nine major markets actually lost jobs during the same span.
The Austin area expanded by 17.7 percent in the past half-decade, adding 268,000 new residents. It now has a population of nearly 1.8 million. Provo, Utah, which grew by 18.2 percent, was the only major market to outpace Austin. The population of the typical market increased by 5.6 percent in five years.
